Is there a way to trigger external flashes on the E-330/E-500? PDF  | Print |
I am planning to use the E-330/500 in a studio photography environment with studio-type strobes. The E-330/500 does not have a flash sync terminal to connect a studio strobe sync cable. Is there a way to trigger these external flashes?

If the studio flash strobes to be used have built in optical slave trigger capabilities, one option would be to use the light from the built-in flash of the camera to trip the external strobes.

The "Manual Flash" option within the Toolbox1 menu will disable the pre-flash from camera's internal flash, allowing the correct flash synchronization with an external slave flash. Once "Manual Flash" is activated, the user can preset the power of the built in flash from FULL, ¼. 1/16,and 1/64 from the "Flash Mode" option with the CameraSettings2 submenu. The lowest power setting that will output sufficient light to trip the studio strobes is recommended in order to minimize the lighting effect from the camera's built in flash.

Alternative options include the use of third-party infrared slave trigger devices that can be mounted onto the hotshoe of the camera body, as well as third-party hot-shoe mounted "pc-sync adapters" that will allow for a direct cable connection.

Olympus cannot be responsible for possible malfunctioning of the camera when such third-party devices are used. As such, the user should make compatibility and safety checks with the manufacturer of these third-party devices before using them with Olympus cameras.
