Why isn't my camera connecting with my computer?
Please check the following topics when computer does not recognize the camera (Removable Disk) or you cannot view images stored in the camera (media).
  1. To confirm the condition of camera and/or connecting cable.
     
  2. To confirm the context of device manager.
     
  3. To confirm drive letters.
    (When an error message: [Drive:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function] appeared.)

     
  4. Driver for Windows 98 had been installed by mistake.
    (When an error message: [An error occurred during the installation of this device] appeared.)

1. To confirm the condition of camera and/or connecting cable.

  1. Confirm the media in camera
    Please confirm the media has been inserted correctly in media slot of your camera.
    Please refer to
    Inserting Media for a typical case of inserting media.
    As well as the above, please confirm that your media can be used in the camera without difficulty as some media might be a problem itself.

  2. Confirm the setup or mode setting in the camera
    Most of the cases, you need some preparation on camera such as lens barrier or mode setting when connecting with computer.

  3. Confirm USB cable is connected properly
    Please confirm whether your camera and computer were connected properly as the following illustration.

  4. Reboot the computer
    Please reboot your computer after you disconnected camera from your computer. When the computer restarted, then please reconnect them.
Caution:
Computer may not be able to recognize the camera when you use USB HUB for connecting camera and computer. Please note the use of USB HUB is out of operation warranty. Please try connecting camera and computer without USB HUB if you currently use it.

  1. Open [Control Panel] folder.
    Please click [Start] button, choose [Settings] and then [Control Panel] from the pop-up menus.
    * If you use Windows XP in your computer, please click [Start] button and choose [Control Panel] from the menu.

    Click [Start] button and choose [Control Panel] from the menu.


     
  2. Set up the System Properties.
    Please double-click to open [System] icon in [Control Panel].
    * If you use Windows XP in your computer, please click [Performance and Maintenance] and then select [System] to open.

    Please click [Performance and Maintenance] icon.

    Please click [System] icon.


     
  3. Click [Hardware] tab.
    Please choose [Hardware] tab in the System Properties.

    Please choose [Hardware] tab.


     
  4. Click [Device Manager] button.
    There are several buttons in the [Hardware] tab window. Please click [Device Manager] button.

    Please click [Device Manager] button.


     
  5. Check the context of Device Manager.
    When the USB driver was recognized properly on computer, device names such as following should appear in Device Manager. Once in a while some different device names are placed instead improperly.
    • [Disk drives] -> [OLYMPUS <name of your camera>]
    • [Storage volumes] -> [Generic volume]
    • [Universal Serial Bus controllers] -> [USB Mass Storage Device]

    When the USB driver was recognized properly on computer, device names like these should be appeared in Device Manager.

     

• If there is no such device names as the above image appeared...
  1. Delete the improper device names.
    If there is no such device names as the above image appeared and instead you find any device which appears only when you connected camera, it should be improper device. Please right-click on the device and choose [Uninstall] from the menu. Then click [Update Driver...] after you uninstall it.
    (As a quite few case, device name other than [Other Device] or sub-device [USB Device] might be found.)
    * Please DO NOT insert CD-ROM which came with you camera during the time.

    If the camera was recognized as an unknown device, please right-click on the device and choose [Uninstall] from the pop-up menu.


     
  2. Set the camera to be recognized anew.
    Please click on [Scan for hardware changes] button while selecting <the name of your computer>.
    * Please DO NOT insert CD-ROM which came with you camera during the time.

    Click on [Scan for hardware changes] button while selecting <the name of your computer>.


     
When you find [OLYMPUS <name of your camera>], [USB Mass Storage Device] and [Generic volume] placed properly in Device Manager, then please confirm [Removable Disk] icon is in [My Computer] being recognized on computer.

Memo:
There are many devices necessary for computer operation in Device Manager. Please reconfirm before you delete devices.
